I pulled from themes that shaped my childhood (like <em>Sleepy Hollow<\/em>) and modern favorites (like <em>Five Nights at Freddy&#8217;s<\/em>). I was just 12 when the movie came out, but I saw it in theaters three times. I remember my excitement in getting the soundtrack CD on Christmas and I listened to it on repeat for days. Matching the film&#8217;s tone, the piece is dark and whimsical, almost like a child&#8217;s lullaby. It frames the film&#8217;s fairy-tale like premise: Two little girls disappear into the woods the day that their parents were killed. Guillermo del Toro is known for his perfect blending of fantasy and horror (even in the films he only produces, like <em>Mama<\/em>). Javier Navarrete&#8217;s haunting score fits wonderfully with the film&#8217;s dark themes and beautifully horrific fairy-tale monsters. It blends a sweeping score with quirky cute moments that fit well with the film&#8217;s premise about magical murderous puppets. The music makes one feel like something is hiding beneath the surface and nothing is quite what it seems.\u00a0<\/p><p>A side note, it is quite hard to find the original audio for the theme. According IMDB, when Philip Glass signed up to compose the score for the film he thought it would be &#8220;an artful version of\u00a0Clive Barker&#8217;s short story &#8216;The Forbidden'&#8221;, but instead it turned out to be, in his vision, &#8220;a low-budget slasher&#8221;. Glass was reportedly disappointed in the film and felt that he had been manipulated.\u00a0<\/p><p>I do not agree that the film is just a low-budget slasher, but Glass&#8217; score certainly helps to elevate the film and create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-563e413b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"563e413b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">6. The composer used real children&#8217;s toys to add to the score. The song itself is based on a minor-key version of &#8220;You are My Sunshine&#8221;, twisting a familiar family-friendly tune into something sinister. No stranger to horror, McCreary continues to create phenomenal soundtracks. The score won it its respective categories at the World Soundtrack Awards, Hollywood Music in Media Awards, Black Reel Awards, and more.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;Anthem&#8221; is the film&#8217;s opening track, playing as we see an ever-growing wall of caged rabbits. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190508181256\/https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2019\/03\/us-movie-music-composer-michael-abels-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview with <em>Slate<\/em><\/a>, Abels said that he wanted the song to &#8220;sound like an evil march. Like you knew that someone with bad intentions was coming.&#8221; In regards to the nonsense lyrics sung by the haunting child chorus, he said, &#8220;The reason the lyrics are nonsense has everything to do with\u00a0<em>Us<\/em>, which is we want to communicate the message that there\u2019s a group of people who are organizing, but we don\u2019t want the audience to understand their purpose. As a huge FNAF fan, I was first in line to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4589218\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Five Nights at Freddy&#8217;s<\/em><\/a> (2023) when it came out. The theme by the Newton Brothers was a perfect fit with the feel of the game. It harkened back to old 8-bit game music while using modern instrumentals and beats.
