Autumn Leaves

As the leaves change color and turn the world a beautiful palette of reds, yellows, and oranges, I think about the quintessential fall song, Autumn Leaves. Autumn Leaves is an English adaptation of the French song, Les Feuilles Mortes (“The Dead Leaves”) composed by Joseph Kosma. Johnny Mercer wrote the English lyrics (which differ from the original French). Throughout the 1950’s popular artists covered the song, and it is still a jazz standard to this day.

The Song

While many artists have covered this song over the years, the most recognizable version (and my favorite) is by Nat King Cole in 1955. His voice and the melancholy melody hit an emotional chord in me. The song makes me think of lost friends and family, while also remembering the warm memories with them I will cherish forever.

The Lyrics

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Alternate Versions

As I said earlier, this is a widely covered song with many versions to choose from. Nate King Cole himself even recorded the song in multiple languages (including French & Japanese). Here are a couple alternate versions I enjoy.
