Cozy Autumn Morning Playlist

Do you love crisp fall mornings? Are you counting down the days until spooky season menus abound? Do you get the urge to wear flannel even in the heat of summer? Then this Cozy Autumn Morning Playlist is for you. Listen to these songs and dream of wearing flannel, watching autumn leaves, and feeling a warm pumpkin spice latte in your hands.

The Song List

I am creating this post on Day 47 of my #Emilys100DaysOfHalloween challenge: Wear Flannel. Yes, I am wearing flannel, but a full blog post on that didn’t feel like it would be particularly interesting. Instead, I thought of what I feel while I don my favorite red flannel shirt. I think of stepping out my front door in the autumn mornings and feeling the cool air. I remember the distant smell of fireplaces and being surrounded by orange, red, and golden leaves. Flannel is the perfect outfit for hayrides, pumpkin patches, and sipping a pumpkin spice matcha at my favorite local cafe. Those are the moments this playlist reminds me of. I like it as a background on the days when I am wishing for fall weather and going through my chores or desk work.

Playlist Song Explanations

1. "Autumn Leaves" - Ryo Fukui

As I mentioned in my “Autumn Dreams Playlist”, Autumn Leaves is one of the most recognizable songs for fall. So, for this playlist I have included an all-instrumental version. I love the upbeat tempo and strong piano melody of this version. It has a wonderful energy that gets me ready for anything the day may bring.

2. "Exploration" - Bruno Coulais

Coraline (2009) is a stop-motion animation movie directed by Henry Selick that adapts Neil Gaimon’s book of the same name. This song rembodies the whimsy and feeling of adventure in the autumn season. It is a youthful song that reminds me of playing on haybales and wandering through pumpkin patches.

3. "Guitar Etude No. 3" - Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg

While this song doesn’t have direct ties to the fall season, I have always associated its gentle acoustic guitar, percussion, and flute with autumn craft fairs. It reminds me of local artists and creators coming together with local farmers and bakeries for a peaceful market.

Alternatively, its similarity to elevator music can make one feel like they are sitting at a small cafe on an October morning.

4. "October" - Lysander

According to the composer’s Spotify profile, Lysander composes “piano music with a dark academia vibe, capturing the essence of autumn and the melancholic beauty of rainy days.” That is a fitting description for October. The gentle piano creates a cozy backdrop for studying, staring at the falling leaves, or wandering through streets to view Halloween decor.

5. "Prelude (Over the Garden Wall)" - The Blasting Company

The Cartoon Network series Over the Garden Wall (2014) is filled with autumn and vintage Halloween imagery. Its soundtrack was composed and performed by The Blasting Company, consisting of Brandon Armstrong, Justin Rubenstein, and Joshua Kaufman. The music blends classic Americana, folk, and autumnal sounds. I get nostalgic for East Coast autumns when I hear it.

6. "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" - Vince Guaraldi

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown has been enchanting children and adults alike since its debut in 1966. Its theme, The Great Pumpkin Waltz, takes listeners on a nostalgic journey to fall mornings and classroom conversations.

7. "Merry-Go-Round of Life" - Joe Hisaishi

As I have said numerous times in this post, autumn is about whimsy and fantasy. One soundtrack that thoroughly embodies that magical feel is from Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). Joe Hisaishi’s opening theme, “Mery-Go-Round of Life”, begins with a lovely piano riff that reminds me of falling leaves. The piece builds to a full orchestra, bringing the listener along for a magical ride through worlds of witches and wizards.

8. "Sketch of the Unknown" - The Blasting Company

This track was one of The Blasting Company’s initial ideas for Over the Garden Wall (2014). Its simple piano melody is nostalgic Americana with a touch of melancholy and mystery. It is a relaxing tune to listen to while I take a matcha break in my morning.

9. "Reflections" - Toshifumi Hinata

Toshifumi Hinata originally released this song in 1986 on the album Reality in Love. In 2021 ALFA Music, a Japanese music label and publisher, released an official music video that embodied the song’s meandering feel, with a young woman spending a gray, foggy day in the woods. The song creates a pensive atmosphere (with a little bit of melancholy), which feels right for a cloudy autumn day.

10. "Dancing with a Ghost" - Ophelia Wilde

On her website, Ophelia Wilde describes this piece as “perfect for slow-dancing with a ghost lover through a long abandoned ballroom, while the dusty piano in the corner plays itself. The sadness in this piece is heart-breaking and the melody goes around your head, long after the old piano fell silent and the ghost dissolved into thin air.” I don’t think that I can come up with a better description than that!

11. "The Piano Duet" - Danny ELfman

If there is an instrument for Fall, the piano is it. I love this tune from Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride (2005). It is a duet between the shy groom Victor Van Dort and the wronged “corpse bride”, Emily. Initially a sad melody played by Emily, Victors joins to turn the piece into a heartfelt duet of friendship. As with many of Elfman’s scores, this piece has a hauntingly Halloween-season feel.

12. "Carnival of Souls" - Verne Langdon

Enough with the moody and melancholy songs! This song embodies the Halloween side of the season. Dark carnivals, creepy clowns, and just a hint of dangerous tricks. It reminds me of Ray Bradbury’s autumnal classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.

13. "Practical Magic" - Alan Silvestri

To end this playlist, the theme from Practical Magic (1998) brings back memories of youthful adventures and whimsy during the autumn season. It is the perfect theme to send you off on a day of Halloween season fun.
