“Suckablood” Short Film

“Suckablood” Short Film

Although Disney and modern children’s programming have watered down fairytales, the original stories were much darker. They were meant to scare us straight, keep us from venturing to far into the woods or do dangerous things; they were meant to help us grow into functioning adults and keep us safe. Coming from these dark places of magic and fantasy, they are a perfect inspiration for modern horror.

Suckablood is the 5th film in the Bloody Cuts Horror anthology. This dark, gothic bedtime story (obviously inspired by the German tale, “The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb”) is directed by Ben Tillett. The visual design is amazing and the macabre rhyming narration creates the perfect fairytale atmosphere.

I first saw it on the big screen at Screamfest Horror Film Festival, now I am sharing with you via Youtube.

Disney’s ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter

Disney’s ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter

Disney theme parks are not usually known for attractions that terrify guests. One of the greatest exceptions to this is Disney’sΒ ExtraTERRORestrial Alien EncounterΒ (often referred to as just “Alien Encounter”). From June 20th, 1995 – October 12th, 2003 this scary theater in the round style show frightened audiences with the scariest alien Disney has ever designed.

No, not this Guy. Poor Skippy.

This attraction took guests into X-S Tech (yes, the name is a bit of a pun and helps to set a mood of dark humor) where the founder of the company was ready to demonstrate a new form of technology to help intergalactic travel. His opening spiel included many lines of dry humor, my favorite being, “Profit is just a by-product we’ve learned to live with”.

The second pre-show area featured a robot known as Simulated Intelligence Robotics or “SIR” – voiced by Tim Curry – who showed how the teleportation technology worked by transporting poor Skippy (the cute alien pictured above) from one side of the room to the other – with only minimal side-effects (Skippy was pretty singed after his trip). Then SIR showed how the technology can indefinitely suspend subjects in teleportation. The audience heard one last cry from poor Skippy before being herded to the main show area.

Photo From Disney Marketing Pamphlets

The main show area was theater in the round style, with a large “teleportation tube” in the center of the room. Guests would sit in chairs with shoulder restraints (used during the attraction to imply that the alien was climbing over the audience, create intimate directional sounds of the alien breathing, and have the alien “taste” guests’ hair).

When the director of X-S tried to teleport into the theater, a slight error occurred, causing a horrific alien beast to arrive instead. The alien inevitably escaped, ran rampant through the theater, and guests barely made it out alive from their encounter. All the while darkly humorous dialogue from both the X-S staff and “other guests” were heard. Some memorable lines include, “Don’t eat me, eat that guy!” followed by a loud crunch. Or when the alien first appeared, “It’s ugly”, “It’s horrible”, “It’s my mother in law!”

The experience was one of the most immersive and clever in Walt Disney World, but its cult following was not enough to keep Disney from closing the attraction due to its excessively scary nature. In November 2004 the attraction was toned down and re-themed to becomeΒ Stitch’s Great Escape, a horrible assault on the memory of this once great attraction.

We can no longer experience the magic of this show, however we can still reminisce while watching videos on Youtube. Here is a full walk-through of the show:

Halloween Spooks – Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Halloween Spooks – Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

One of my favorite jazzy Halloween songs isΒ Halloween SpooksΒ performed by the jazz trio,Β Lambert, Hendricks &Β Ross. Vocalists Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks, and Annie Ross create a melodic chorus and fun scat impressions of a ghost, witch, and demon, all set to a fun jazz beat.

This song encapsulates the fun of the holiday with the tongue in cheek chorus: “Halloween Spooks outside my window. Halloween Spooks behind the tree. I wish that the children could see, but I can’t find them for the life of me, and there’s Halloween Spooks outside my window pane.

“Jack” Short Film

Drew Daywalt is an expert in creating eerie short films. His youtube channel is full of creepy little movies that are sure to please any horror fan.Β Mockingbird andΒ There’s No Such Thing never fail to creep me out, even though I have seen them dozens and dozens of times by now.

InΒ Jack, Daywalt sets up the beginning of a horror tale in less than 60 seconds. Made for the Santa Barbara MINUTE Film Festival, this piece achieves its goal and makes us want 60 minutes more to find out the rest of the story. It is a wonderful inspiration and example of making every second count in your film.

Party Games by R.L. Stine

Party Games by R.L. Stine

If you grew up in the 90’s, you read at least one R.L. Stine novel – from either the hugely successful GoosebumpsΒ series or (for the slightly older crowd) theΒ Fear StreetΒ series. Children and teens everywhere loved the creepy fun contained within these books and my library was stocked full of R.L. Stine fare.Β

Then, suddenly, the books stopped coming out. Although people instantly remember the joy of reading these books, no one really questioned why one of the most prolific authors of the 90’s was no longer on bookstore shelves. Other authors have stepped up to make young adult horror novels, but none have truly captured the feeling of creepy amusement parks (One Day at HorrorLand orΒ theΒ Fear Street: Fear Park trilogy) or killer piano lessons (Piano Lessons Can be Murder) quite like Stine. Now one has to scour eBay, yard sales, and used bookstores in hopes of finding worn copies of their childhood favorites.

Finally in 2014 R.L. Stine revisited Fear Street to create a story for a new generation of teens (and adults now well into their twenties who loved R.L. Stine in their youth) to enjoy.Β Party Games was released in September 2014 and there was no way I could go without owning this gem.

Her friends warn her not to go to Brendan Fear’s birthday party at his family’s estate on mysterious Fear Island. But Rachel Martin has a crush on Brendan and is excited to be invited. Brendan has a lot of party games planned. But one game no one planned intrudes on his partyβ€”the game of murder. As the guests start dying one by one, Rachel realizes to her horror that she and the other teenagers are trapped on the tiny island with someone who may want to kill them all. How to escape this deadly game? Rachel doesn’t know whom she can trust. She should have realized that nothing is as it seems… on Fear Island.

So Does It Hold Up

In short, yes. This book encapsulated all the atmosphere, twists, and turns of the original series. Aside from the question of why the Fear family hasn’t been run out of town because of all the murders/”accidents”/drama from many of the previous novels, the story is fun and you can’t help but be drawn into the detailed descriptions and action.

I will admit that this book is a little tame to the grittier, sexier young adult novels of late, but I personally like that. It is about escapism and a fantasy where life is about finding sweet teenage love as opposed to quickies, the harsh realities of life, and hard partying. Sure, one can strain to predict the twists and reveals from chapter to chapter and find the familiar formula from all Stine’s works, but if you understand the point of the novels, you can enjoy the book for what it is: just a fun read.

I would rate this book 4/5 stars in relation to the previousΒ Fear StreetΒ series books. Although the book is a little tame and the characters not as flushed out as they could be, it is a great quick read with an intriguing adventure. I look forward to the newΒ Fear Street series and hope that the future releases will be even better!

Silly Symphony – The Skeleton Dance

Silly Symphony – The Skeleton Dance

From 1929 to 1939, Walt Disney Productions created 75 animated short films in a series called,Β Silly Symphony. These short animated scenes featured instrumental music and unlike the Mickey Mouse shorts, these cartoons usually did not feature our beloved mouse or the usual Disney characters (although 1934’s “The Wise Little Hen” Silly Symphony was Donald Duck’s first appearance).

The very first of theseΒ Silly Symphonies wasΒ The Skeleton Dance. It is a dark dance macabre where skeletons and other spooky creatures dance to a minor key foxtrot. As a child (and still today as an adult) this cartoon struck me as a perfect blend of spookiness and fun. It is a wonderful example of how horror imagery can be used for family entertainment – each animated figure is rooted in macabre but the dancing and physical comedy keep the mood light.

Here is the short to view if you dare:

Mr. White’s Resort

Mr. White’s Resort

By Emily Louise Rua

Mr. White stood next to the model of his resort. His goatee was sharply pointed, his suit neatly pressed, and, of course, this presentable presentation was topped with a fine boater hat. He wore a smile, his friendliest yet – though if you looked in the corner of his left eye, right where it creased when he blinked, you could see a glimmer of the truth behind it all. Mr. White always stood with his right side to the audience.

The model of the resort sat atop an immaculately white podium, illuminated from above by a single spotlight. Even in this small scale, one could see the architectural marvel these buildings would soon become. The entrance to the resort stood tall and welcoming, a white even brighter and cleaner than the podium it rested on. There were arches and atlases, parapets and a porte-cochΓ¨re, columns and copulas, and a lemon- yellow stone molding to line each element. It was opulent and awesome, yet had a strange allure that invited you to explore further comforts within. Even as a model, Mr. White’s resort beckoned you inside its oddly enticing doors.

Past the main entrance and lobby stood the resort’s various areas of attractions and amenities, each its own color – a clever theming Mr. White insisted upon personally. Mr. White personally insisted upon every aspect of the resort, though this fact does nothing but reinforce that Mr. White himself picked this theme. The hotel stood like the palace from Arabian Nights in a majestic indigo. Every inch shaped and curved – absolutely no jarring angles or incitant scenery, creating a seamless haven for repose. Each room would be spacious, with no less than one king-size bed. It was best not to look upon this model for long, as its miniature somnolent exterior could almost lull one into a drowsy state.

In a bright delectable orange the food court and gift shop area could not be missed. Even in miniature, one could see the detailed hodgepodge of buildings – pagodas for the Chinese noodle house, a leaning Tower of Pisa atop the Italian pizzeria, an Eiffel Tower above a Parisian cafΓ©, and a mini Statue of Liberty at the entrance of the burger joint. Spattered amidst the restaurants were the gift shop faΓ§ades, with neon signs already touting β€œsales” and β€œgreat deals”. Buttons and bobble heads, snow globes and sunscreen, knick-knacks and more would be found in the gift shops once built. All these structures led to a massive eatery at the far end of the area – an all-you-can eat buffet for guests who could not choose just one place to dine. A mouth-watering display, if Mr. White could say so himself – and he did, every time he described the area to an audience.

Now, trinkets and burgers could entice some, but many of the guests of Mr. White’s fine resort would be of a higher caliber, expecting the finest of luxury and exclusivity. To the left of the orange food court, atop a hill, stood the elite, members-only pool and gym. A royal violet was the color that defined this section; the pool floor was violet, as were the chair covers, the free weights, the changing rooms, the pool-side bar, the towels, the treadmills, the Pilates mats, and the flowers (plastic in the model, but Mr. White assured all buyers that all flora would be real and meticulously maintained once the resort was built). Only VIPs and the most special of guests would be able to set foot in this majestic retreat overlooking the rest of the resort. A common pool would be built for the masses somewhere else on property, though as everyone in the room with Mr.White was surely elite enough to enter this exorbitant expanse, no one quite cared to discern where.

Only a short walk away from the pool – judging by the model’s scale – was the high-end shopping center. Made entirely from green-tinted glass, guests could gaze into every store, drool at the luxury, and – if anyone could afford it – even buy an item or two from only the best and most sophisticated designers. Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Armani – a designer would sell their soul (though Mr. White was not one for such figures of speech) to be able to be included with these elite retailers – and the guests would feel just as lucky to be able to see such grandeur.

On the opposite side of the model resort stood the most vibrantly red sports & recreation center one had ever seen. Sporting events of every type would occur daily; from fencing to football, boxing to basketball – every fan would be able to root for their sport and their team, and, of course, boo their opponents. The bloodier the better – all sports would be full contact and no holds barred. The Greek-style coliseum would incorporate every amenity the modern sports fan could desire: sectioned seating to divide rival fans, betting stations for those who like to up the ante on their experience, and of course shops to buy team merchandise. Even the athletically inept could enjoy competitions, with special board gaming rooms filled with such classics as Monopoly, Risk, and Diplomacy. Atop the massive coliseum a crimson-colored bar would freely serve winners and fans of the day’s winning teams. Losers could only gaze at the celebrations from afar; no consolation prizes. Mr. White believed man’s drive to outperform an opponent was one of the most natural things in the world, and he never missed an opportunity to forge at least a little friendly competition.

Now, one thing few could accuse Mr. White of was misunderstanding the desires of his customers – and the few who did accuse him of such were undoubtedly wrong. Not all guests are as enthusiastic about competition as Mr. White; some prefer other things to do, and Mr. White would happily provide other vices. To the right of the sports stadium a navy blue cluster of small buildings stood down a single strip of road. This Entertainment District would include a wide variety of enticingly exciting venues. Couples could re- ignite their passions while dancing romantically close at one of the many dance halls or by cuddling in a darkened movie theater. Singles could seek out companionship in the hottest nightclubs and bars, or visit special speed-dating venues. Strip clubs and more exotic faire would also be dispersed throughout the area, for those customers who were more willing to shed their angelic faΓ§ade. Entertainment and passion, pleasures and pastimes, this area would promote carefree fun and indulgence.

One area left to explore, though the investors were already all but throwing their money at Mr. White’s feet. Such meetings were never much of a gamble for Mr. White – he always made sure the odds were in his favor (and he always had an ace up his sleeve for emergencies, though no one dare accuse him of such). With all that said, it is no surprise that next to entertainment district Mr. White planned to construct a golden high- rise casino. Guests would have the chance to win big on thousands of different slot machines and dealer tables. Their ticket to the high life and having it all, massive jackpots would soon lure a multitude of guests through the lemon-yellow doors. With convenient ATMs, tellers, and credit guests could pursue their dream of wealth to their heart’s content. Mr. White was certainly never going to discourage anyone from such a gallant pursuit.

All in all the resort seemed like it would easily return all investments and then some, which made the investors practically salivate. Yachts, mansions, large Jacuzzis, big-breasted blondes half your age – they all require wealth to both acquire and maintain, a fact the investors knew well. By all calculations they could expect a return on their investments in mere weeks after opening (and receive the keys to their new Ferraris only a few days after). Without even batting an eyelash the men signed Mr. White’s contract and wrote their more than generous checks – after all, the road to the resort couldn’t be solely paved with good intentions.

The presentation was over. Mr. White showed the investors to the exit and turned off the lights. The bulldozers would be called that evening and ground would be broken the next day. For a brief moment Mr. White allowed the glimmer of truth in his left eye to spread to the deviant smile across his thin lips. Soon we’ll all see Mr. White’s resort.

And we’ll never leave.

WDW Haunted Mansion Interactive Queue

WDW Haunted Mansion Interactive Queue

Even for an avid horror fan like myself, one cannot help but love the magic of the “Happiest Place on Earth”, Walt Disney World. Β Every inch of the Florida resort is designed to make guests feel like they are transported to a fantasy world filled with castles, mythical creatures, movie magic, and a few playful spooks.

In addition to the fantastic animatronics and illusions, this attraction has a myriad of little devilish details for those who care to pay attention (for example, I love the woodwork that looks like monstrous little faces in the Doom Buggy loading area). A horror fan could spend hours taking in all that this attraction has to offer – and do not even get me started on the rich backstories and legends that have arisen about the specific ghosts, as we would be here all night. For this article, we are going to look at the playful Haunted Mansion interactive queue that was added in 2011.

Β

Disney has devised a new way to encourage families to interact with one another while furthering the theming of the ride – a ghoulish new graveyard with plenty of games and surprises to keep guests entertained for their 15-20 minute wait (pro tip – if the line is longer than that, come back later in the day).

The first area contains five busts of a peculiar family whose members all met with unfortunate demises. Guests must read the accompanying plaques to guess who murdered who.

From there guests walk through the graveyard and can play around crypts of some of The Haunted Mansion’s Β more memorable denizens. A composer’s crypt (though I suppose he mostly decomposes now) has a musical wall where ghostly instruments play a rendition of “Grim Grinning Ghosts”. Guests can touch the various etchings on the tomb and whichever instrument is touched will carry on the tune.

Among a few unconventional instruments, guests can also see the one-eyed cat, an early concept for an evil resident of the mansion. Although the cat was cut from the final ride, it is now part of the outer graveyard – and part of the ghostly musical revue.

Around the next bend in the line is the crypt of poet Prudence Pock. Residing inside the crypt is a glowing book where Prudence’s poetry continues to proliferate. Guests are welcome to shout out the missing rhymes to help Prudence finish her work.

One of my personal favorites among the new additions is the grave of Captain Culpepper Clyne.

Here floats Captain Culpepper Clyne. Allergic to dirt so he’s pickled in brine. He braved the sea and all her wrath but drowned on land while taking a bath

Occasionally guests will hear the sea captain gag and water will spray from the grave – a much welcome way to cool down in the Florida heat. One cannot help but love the details on this piece, especially the Β creepy staring fish.

Β

Of course, there is also a slew of the classic morbidly amusing gravestones that have remained from the original queue.

Also preserved is the original gravestone for Madame Leota. This was the only animated gravestone in the original queue set-up. Once every minute or so, the eyes on the bust will change to ghostly eyeballs and look back and forth at the crowd for a few seconds. If you are not paying close attention, you can miss it completely, and with the quickness of the line, you rarely get to see it occur more than once while waiting. It is hilarious to watch unknowing guests comment that they thought they saw the gravestone move, while the rest of their party assures them that it is just a normal stone.

New technology and creative minds ensure that Walt Disney World – and all Disney theme parks – will forever be changing and becoming more immersive. The Haunted Mansion interactive queue is a perfect introduction for the creepy fun that lies ahead.

Zombeavers Trailer

Zombeavers Trailer

2015 will bring us many tantalizing new horror features, but none as oddly intriguing as Zombeavers.Β Set for a March 20th U.S. release, this horror-comedy directed by Jordan Rubin follows a group of college kids menaced by a swarm of deadly zombie beavers as they struggle to survive in a riverside cabin in the woods. The Zombeavers trailer is now available and it is exciting!

Zombeavers-poster-691x1024

Many films have featured zombified dogs, cats, and even chickens (Poultrygeist, anyone?), but the beaver has been mysteriously absent from pop-culture zombie references. Thankfully we now have a film that rights this horrific oversight.

The Zombeavers trailer shows the campy thrills awaiting viewers and a few clever lines of dialogue – my favorite being, “We can’t turn against each other. That’s what the beavers want!” Practical effects and a ridiculous premise all combine to make this a must-see horror-comedy for 2015. Let’s hope that it lives up to the fun the trailer depicts.
