Last year the Hollywood Guerilla Film Club brought together nine independent filmmakers to create modern interpretations of Dante’s Nine Circles of Hell. Each filmmaker had free reign to create a nine-minute film embodying the theme of their particular level of Hell. Their visions were compiled in the unique and macabre feature-length horror anthology, 9 Ways to Hell.

A Familiar Face

Our very own Emily, of TheHorrorOfBeingEmily.com, both directed and acted in Gluttony. Gluttony tells the tale of two roommates, one of whom embraces excess. She soon learns, however, that you can have too much of a good thing.

Fears & Beers: “Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4”

Uniting horror lovers year-round, Screamfest presents Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4 for their latest Fears & Beers event on February 20th, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. The event takes place at the TCL Chinese 6 Theaters (6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028). Tickets are $16.00 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Fears & Beers events include a screening, Q&A, trivia, prizes, and more. They are wonderful events that bring together horror fans from around the area for an evening of socializing and fun.

This month’s event includes screening of the 4th installment of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, a Q&A with director Renny Harlin and cast moderated by Brian Collins of Birth.Movies.Death, and the usual socializing at the theater bar.

In Nightmare on Elm Street Part 4, Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may be able to defeat him for good.

“Don’t Look Away” Short Film

Don’t Look Away is a gem of a short horror film I discovered on Youtube. With nearly four and a half million views, the public has certainly deemed it worthy of a watch. The premise is pretty simple: a teenage girl is on the phone with her dad when she discovers a menacing figure staring at her from the front yard. Her dad tells her to never look away and that he will rush home. She learns the hard way to always follow her dad’s instructions exactly.

The film is directed by filmmaker Christopher Cox. Take a look at the film below – it is best without too many spoilers.

Pretty neat, wasn’t it?

I really enjoy this short for its simplicity. The monster does not rely on a surprising or fantastic appearance, and the setting is simple. Although the creature has a human-like appearance, it is also somehow off. It reminds me of how “It Follows” handles its malevolent force. The film may lack action and fight sequences, but it does contain an abundance of tension.

It was refreshing to see the way that the father reacted to the monster threat. Too often horror films focus on all the characters just finding the monster and then learning to fight it. I love that for the father it was just another fact of life and he knew how to handle it when it arose. An extensive backstory is not always needed – I love that I am still imagining what this monster actually is and how it came into being. The ambiguity makes it much creepier – it seems as though it could appear to anyone at any time.

The film is a nice contained story, but I would love to see more within the world. I look forward to the filmmaker’s next cinematic endeavor!

The Prey (directed by James Webber) takes place on Halloween night. Mel and her boyfriend drive home from a lackluster Halloween party, arguing about Mel’s lack of enthusiasm for the holiday. Tired of the fighting, Mel ditches her ride and opts to walk home alone, but she soon learns that she has attracted the attention of a shifty looking young man. As he begins to follow her the night takes a turn for the worse. Starring Rebecca Van Cleave (Game of Thrones, The Royals), Sam Gittins (Howl, Ripper Street), and James Alexandrou (Eastenders) The Prey is an urban horror with added bite!

This short film was created as part of the Springhead Film Company, a London based filmmaking collective specializing in
narrative film projects and creative video content.

It was featured at Screamfest Horror Film Festival 2015 and at the ScareLA 2016 Screening Room in the Screamfest Horror Film Festival block. You can now view it on the Crypt TV Youtube channel.

It is the dead of night. You awake to a dark room, only lit by the faint glow of moonlight from your window. Something begins to feel out of place. You try to get up, but realize that you cannot move. A figure appears in your doorway and slowly creeps nearer to your bed. You want to run, to scream, to do something, but you are paralyzed. The figure crawls onto the bed and onto your chest. It is grotesque and inhuman. You feel the pressure on your chest; you can’t breathe. The things stares at you and bears its teeth in a macabre smile. It raises its clawed hands and then –

You wake up.

Sleep paralysis is when either during awakening or falling asleep, one is aware but unable to move. Often one may hear, feel, or see things that are not there while in the sleep paralysis state, resulting in intense fear. Episodes generally last less than a few minutes, but for the person experiencing the paralysis, it can feel like a much longer nightmare.

“Other Lily” is an animated horror short film that explores the phenomenon of sleep paralysis. Animated and directed by David Romero, the short film follows Lily, a young woman who suffers from a sleep paralysis that may have horrific implications on her waking life.

An official selection for the ScareLA Screening Room’s Animated Horror short film block in 2016, this animation is sure to give you nightmares!

“Slut” Short Film

“Slut” Short Film

Set in the 1970’s, “Slut” tells the story of a naive teenage girl whose attempt to impress the local boys in her small town makes her the target of a murderous sociopath instead.

“Slut” was written and directed by filmmaker Chloe Okuno as a thesis project for the American Film Institute graduate program. The twenty-one minute student short was shot in Southern California over a period of seven days with a day and a half of re-shoots. The roller rink scenes were shot in Ventura, the farm house was in Piru, and all the other scenes were shot on a stage in downtown Los Angeles.

In an interview with Sean Decker from Dread Central, Okuno stated that her influences included such films as “Carrie”, “Halloween”, and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” – iconic 1970’s horror films that certainly inform Okuno’s aesthetic. “Slut” also explores similar themes – delving into the sexual awakening of our young main character and the societal “dangers” of such female sexuality. Actress Molly McIntyre is an endearing lead we root for as she crushes over the local hotties and steps outside her comfort zone to transform into one herself. Unfortunately for her, predators also lurk in the small town, just waiting to strike alluring women in horror films.

At its core, the film is reminiscent of the fairy tales of yore – a modern Red Riding Hood. Okuno confirmed this parallel in an iterview with Dread Central, stating: “I wanted to find a way to do the classic moment of her coming home to discover the big bad wolf dressed as Grandma in a way that was realistic, or at least relatively realistic. From that sort of conceptual beginning I thought about the character of Red Riding Hood herself, and this awkward, bespectacled 16-year-old girl began to develop pretty naturally, probably coming a bit from classic movie tropes and a bit from my own experience as an awkward teenager.”

In a genre dominated by male directors, Okuno creates a strong film that earned the “Best Student Short” Skully award from Screamfest 2014. Take a look and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

2017 Halloween Shopping Guide

September is here and for Halloween fans we are now into the shopping spree season. Stores everywhere begin to cash in on our collective love for Halloween with festive displays and themed products. From high end boutiques to discount chains you can find all sorts of Halloween fare.

Here are some of the early highlights from the 2017 Halloween season:

Vintage Halloween Style Plates. Set of 4 Plates - Williams Sonoma ($49.99)

These porcelain salad plates feature images taken from vintage Halloween cards. They are listed as microwavable and dishwasher safe so they seem perfect for regular use.

Vintage Halloween Style Platter. Williams Sonoma ($59.99)

A perfect addition to the vintage Halloween plate set is this platter. It features a different image than the ones on the salad plates, but still fits perfectly with the theme. It is porcelain and just as microwave/dishwasher safe as the salad plates. The dimensions are 16.5″ x 10.25″, a not-too-unwieldy size perfect for cookies or desserts. It has a decent amount of weight to it, reinforcing my belief that it will be a long-lasting addition to my kitchen.

9' Skeleton T-Rex with LED Illuminated Eyes - Home Depot ($299.00)

There has been a lot of social media coverage of Home Depot’s skeleton horse this year, but the T-Rex is my pick for the best skeleton of the season. At nine feet tall, this prop will tower over trick or treaters! It also makes a dinosaur sound (though the sound is not as scary as a Jurassic Park roar). Dinosaur-themed Halloween displays are rare, so this is bound to make your yard stand out.

Don’t forget to also add the Hatching Dinosaur Skeleton ($59.98) to complete your display.

Walking Dead Condiment Snack Bowl Set - Pottery Barn ($69)

This is a unique condiment serving statue of a skeleton. The 14.75″ skeleton is aluminum with an antique bronze finish and the two 13.5 ounce serving bowls are glass. The bowls are removable and dish-washer safe for easy cleaning.

Pottery Barn also sells a matching serve bowl & stand for $138.50.

"Steam Pumpkin" Raven Jar Candle Holder - Yankee Candle ($27.99)

This piece mixes Halloween and Steampunk for a cute autumn candle accessory. Steampunk and Halloween work well together, but are rarely mixed in standard decor. That makes this piece a wonderful little find that can have a place in your home year-round.

Canvas Torture Device Prints - Walmart ($22.40 - $16.77)

Add some historical horror into your Halloween display with these canvas prints of torture devices throughout the ages. These prints are 24″ high and 16″ wide and feature a cardboard frame. The exact weight is not listed online but they feel pretty lightweight.

There are also prints available in a similar style that feature fish and bird skeletons.

American Autumn Collection - Bath & Body Works ($25)

Ready to stock up on your hand soaps for the year? Bath & Body Works has revealed its autumn soap fragrance line-up. Of course the classic “Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin” is back along with “Afternoon Apple Picking”, “Crisp Morning Air”, “Pumpkin Cupcake”, “Autumn Citrus & Sandalwood”, and “Wild Berries & Basil”. Soaps can be purchased in a 6-pack or individually. Be sure to look for sales, as Bath & Body Works often has buy three get two free deals and other special pricing.

Many of these fragrances can also be found as lotions, candles, or Wallflower scents. Stock up to have your home smell like autumn year-round!

Howling Wolf Skin Rug - Cost Plus World Market ($79.99)

Have you ever wanted to make your Halloween display a little more fairy-tale like? Feel like Little Red Riding Hood with this Howling Wolf Skin Rug. The dimensions are 49″W x 69″L x 9.5″H and it is made of faux fur so you can rest easy knowing that no animals were actually harmed to make this prop. When visitors stroke the fur or walk over the rug, a sensor will trigger a beastly howl and glowing eyes.

Hocus Pocus Screening at the El Capitan Theatre 2017

Hocus Pocus is a quintessential Halloween film for anyone who grew up in the 1990’s and has since become a sort of cult classic during the Halloween season. The film stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters and showcases character actor Doug Jones as zombie Billy Butcherson. The plot is simple: after moving to Salem, a teenage boy accidentally raises three witches – The Sanderson Sisters – from the dead. He teams up with his sister, his crush, a talking cat, and a zombie to save all the town’s children from the Sanderson Sisters’ wrath. Can they survive this Halloween night?

This October, Disney’s El Capitan Theater in Hollywood will screen this film as part of their Halloween film line-up. Screenings will take place October 6 – 15th, 2017. This is an amazing film that is fun to watch on the big screen with a large audience. No doubt, Disney will put on a great pre-show. I highly recommend it as a fun experience that is well worth the ticket price. Standard tickets are $14 per adult and $11 per child/senior. VIP tickets are $23 per person and include popcorn in an El Capitan Theater souvenir tub and a 20-ounce drink. The movie itself is 105 minutes and there is usually about 20 minutes of pre-show fun prior to the screenings. Don’t forget to also listen to the Wurlitzer organ music before the show as well. I usually plan out a few hours for my whole experience.

Disney is also offering a “Spooktacular” Backstage Tour package with film viewings. The website promises that the tour will share the history of the “ghouls and haunts” of the historic building. It will take attendees into areas of the theater rarely open to the public. The theater requires advanced reservations for these tours. Contact the theater for pricing.

My favorite horror films take something mundane and turn it into something extraordinary – they find the horror in the things we interact with or experience every day. One of the most creative films I have seen in this regard is “Killer Kart“, a short film by James Feeney.

The plot is pretty standard: Cass (actress Christine Alicia Rodriguez), a grocery store manager helps her staff close up for the evening only to find that it is anything but business as usual for the night. The remaining staff find that a monster lurks the aisles, ready to devour all who cross its path. What sets this horror-comedy apart is that the titular monster is in fact a sentient grocery kart. The audience can never be quite sure whether it should laugh or scream as the kart continues its rampage of carnage.

“Killer Kart” was created as a student film for The Florida State University College of Motion Picture Arts in 2012, but still holds up as a fun watch. Its practical effects add to the horror and humor – using real creativity in the creature design and the kills. It played at numerous film festivals around the United States, including Screamfest Horror Film Festival (what I believe to be the pinnacle of horror festivals in the U.S.). It is still one of my favorites of the Screamfest short films and I am very excited to be able to share it with the readers of this blog.
