Let's Chat

In 1973, R.H. Bruskin Associate’s American Fears study asked 2,543 adults what they feared out of a list. The rank order of fears reported listed “Speaking Before a Group” at 40.6%, ranking higher than even fear of death (18.7%). Sometimes putting yourself out there can be quite daunting. I have never had much of a fear of public speaking, but when it comes to opening up via the written word, I often hesitate and overthink. Then I end up making nothing at all.

It is easy to try to pre-censor yourself, or only want to put out the best possible product, but practice and repetition are what ultimately improve our pieces to that quality we seek. Writing, filmmaking, photography – really any creative endeavor -will improve as you try new things, experiment, and hone your craft. Failure can also be an important stepping stone. So, even if this post stinks, I can use it to learn and experiment with my voice and brand.

I decided to take the 100 Days to Halloween challenge to push myself to create new posts and content daily. It is hard to overthink when you have 100 pieces to churn out in as many days! Maybe I won’t be able to make it through. But maybe I will. Either way, I am learning and growing – and having a little fun along the way.

Fun Facts About Emily

👻 I was born in Western New York and I’m insanely proud of my hometown community. I love to support the local artists and small businesses in the City of Good Neighbors. Speaking of which – did you know that there is a new haunt in Buffalo this year? Learn more about Nightmare Wharf at the Buffalo Naval Park
🎃 My favorite drink is a Matcha Latte – sweetened, of course. I have been hooked ever since my first trip to Tokyo. I especially love the Pumpkin Matcha mix from the WNY business, Dragon Girl Tea
🧡 My favorite haunted attraction is the “Super Scary Labyrinth of Fear” in Fuji-Q Highland (Fujiyoshida City, Japan). Stateside, I love Knott’s Scary Farm.
🖤 I love to fill my home with spooky and unusual art. From Yeti Heads to Totems, Folklore Carvings to Papercraft. My favorite room is my Halloween-Themed kitchen
💀 In the Vampire vs. Werewolf debate, I am decidedly team werewolf. Listen to my Howl at the Moon Playlist for some lupine tunes.
☠ I attend a monthly writer’s group, Want to read some of my work? Check out “A Haunter’s Tale: Volume II” – two of my short stories are featured.
👺 I have two familiars – kitties Scuffalo and Jinx. Jinx, a classic tuxedo cat, is always on the prowl or getting herself into trouble. Scuffalo is a big oaf whose black cat heart is as large as his appetite. These indoor kitties bring lots of joy to my daily life. My roommate’s tuxedo cat, Lillia, also makes the occasional appearance.
👽 When trick-or-treaters come to my porch they get 4 treats each – something savory (like Cheeze-its or pretzels), something fruity (fruit snacks), and two chocolate candies (although some years I opt for 1 full-size bar instead).
🍁 My Dad and I have been collecting horror films since I was 4 years old. We currently have a collection nearing 3,000 titles.
🍂 When I want to listen to a song to get me in a Halloween mood, I put on “Halloween Spooks” by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.
