Halloween Journal Prompts

Let’s get cozy in our favorite spooky pajamas for a morning of journalling. I try to journal every day, but some mornings I get a serious case of writer’s block. Here are some Halloween journal prompts to inspire you for a spell.

Non-Fiction Halloween Journal Prompts

  • What is the food or drink that reminds you of fall and why?
  • Recount your first trip to a haunted house. Were you scared? Did you make it through or chicken out?
  • What was your favorite Halloween costume and why?
  • Couples costumes – cute or cringe? Why do you feel that way?
  • Pumpkin spice or harvest apple – if you could only have one, which would it be and why?
  • What would you do on your perfect autumn day? 
  • Write about your favorite Halloween season tradition. When did you start it? Who is with you? What does doing it year after year mean to you?
  • Do you think stores push Halloween too early? Are you excited for “summerween” or is it more magical to wait for Fall?
  • What is your favorite horror movie and why? Do you think you’d survive if you were a character in that movie?
  • Describe an autumn walk through your neighborhood – the sights, the sounds, the smells, and the people.
  • Pastel pumpkins, vintage orange & black, gore, or spoopy – describe your Halloween style and why you like it.
  • How do you pick the perfect pumpkin? Do you look for a certain size, shape, or color? Do you go to a pumpkin patch or run to the store Halloween morning? 
  • Write about a Halloween party you have attended in the past. What did you wear? What types of foods & drinks were provided? What was the most memorable part of the evening? 

Creative Halloween Journal Prompts

  • It’s an ultimate showdown between horror titans Freddy, Jason, Michael Meyers, Art the Clown, and Sam (from Trick ‘r Treat). How do each of them do battle, and who wins?
  • You’re walking by the old creepy house at the end of the street on Halloween night. Suddenly the door opens and a voice beckons you inside. Write what happens next.
  • Write a Halloween poem. Each line should start with a letter from “HALLOWEEN” (ex. line 1 – “H”, line 2 – “A”, line 3 “L”, and so on).
  • Every family has a ghost story that passes from generation to generation. Recount your family’s story – and be sure to add literary embellishments.
  • Describe a Halloween night from the perspective of a porch-bound jack-o-lantern.
  • Think of a recent nightmare you’ve had and turn it into a story.
  • You’re a mad scientist and have created a new monster the world has never seen. Describe its appearance, demeanor, strengths, weaknesses, and diet. Will it obey its creator, or have you created the harbinger of your own demise?
  • In the start of your workday the week of Halloween, a witch has turned your favorite co-worker into a toad. The spell will wear off at the end of the shift, but only if you both get all your work done and hide the fact that your coworker is a toad from your boss. How do you handle this situation?
  • You invited eleven of your closest friends to a Halloween masquerade. At the height of the party, you look around the room and realize there are thirteen people there. Who is the mysterious extra guest and what do they want?
  • It is Halloween afternoon and two people are vying for the last pumpkin in the local patch. Write about their antics and who ultimately takes home the prize.
  • Think of a horror movie with an ending you hate. Rewrite the finale to suit your tastes.
  • Write about a dark and stormy night from the perspective of a monster under the bed.
  • A mysterious carnival arrives in October. Describe its sights, sounds, and eerie secrets.
