Halloween Night Walk

Halloween Night Walk

by Emily Louise Rua

Houses loom o’er the darkened street
Autumn leaves crunch beneath my feet
Lit pumpkins stare with carved out grins
Low fog wraps tendrils ‘round my shins
Owls question those who dare trespass
Witches congregate en masse
Embers dance from bonfires near
Eerie moans send chills of fear
Neighbors wait at every door
Nocturnal ghouls laugh, boo, and roar
Impish pranksters cause a stir
Graceful black cats pounce and purr
Haunted visions I have seen
Trick or treat, it’s Halloween

I wrote Halloween Night Walk on a late winter afternoon while missing my favorite time of year. I love autumn evenings in my hometown, walking through silent streets and seeing all the decorations. It has been years since I was able to celebrate a Halloween night in my hometown, but I still remember the excitement and wonder of trick-or-treating there as a child. This poem is my love-letter to those magical evenings.
