Kitty Bungalow

Day 97 of my #Emilys100DaysOfHalloween challenge is “Pet a Black Cat”. My furry familiars are an integral part of my daily life and I am forever grateful for the shelter that found them on the streets as newborns and hand-fed them so they could grow into the lovable loafs they are today (Kitten Rescue LA).

Today, I’d like to highlight another amazing shelter that my roommate has volunteered at since its beginnings in the backyard of a house in the West Adams district of LA, Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats. If you are looking for a new familiar – or if you just need your cat-fix for the day – this is the perfect place to encounter loving cats who need a home.

The Mission

Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cat describes itself as a “community cat organization and kitten socialization facility”. Their cats and kittens come from the Los Angeles area. They offer TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) services, socialize and home cats, and provide a “working cat” program that matches feistier cats with farms or warehouses that need mousers. This no-kill facility has a dedicated network of volunteers and staff that care for the “students” to provide safe and secure outcomes from “hiss to home”. In 2025, the organization facilitated 205 adoptions, 914 TNRs, and 129 working cat placements.

Why Adopt a Rescue Cat

There are so many cats on the streets who can be socialized to be the perfect pets. When you adopt a rescue cat, you are helping to save the life of a furry friend – and you are reducing the stray cat population in your area.

Kitty Bungalow offers both kittens and adult cats in all different colors and breeds. Kittens can grow with you into a loving member of your family. Adult and senior cats are also amazing. Adopting an older cat allows you to know the type of cat you are getting. Their personalities are set and you can learn if your lifestyle will fit with them. Some cats love the quiet life (perfect for someone who is out at work all day), while others love to be social and around their humans (perfect for a house with kids and frequent guests). If you have the space and capacity, think about adopting a bonded pair. They will provide each other with companionship and enrichment – and they will cuddle and groom each other (like my brother-sister pair).

And Why Should You Adopt a Black Cat Specifically?

While outdated superstitions and the fact that they are hard to photograph in low light make some people shy away from black cats, black cats are the best spooky familiars you can ask for. Black is a coat color, not a breed, so you can get a black cat across many different breeds and mixes, from sleek American short-hairs to hugely fluffy Norwegian Forest cats. Black cats come in all sorts of personalities – from elegant, posed, and wise to silly, dopey menaces. There is a perfect black cat out there for any lifestyle and personality type.

Black cats have all the same zoomies, soft bellies, and loving cuddles as any cat. Give them a chance and they will soon become your trusted familiar.
