My Halloween Kitchen

My Halloween Kitchen

Home is where the Halloween heart is, and the heart of my home is my Halloween kitchen. The space is where we cook our meals (and all the sweets I love), play board games, work on craft projects, and spend a lot of our time. Therefore, I knew I had to make it reflect our interests and passions.

My inspiration for the space was the Halloween imagery from vintage Halloween cards. Over the years I slowly added more and more spooky touches. It is an ever-evolving space that gets better each year!

Welcome to My Halloween Kitchen

My favorite area of the kitchen is our dining area. I created my own Halloween chandelier from tin tea light candle holders. The main picture on the wall is a limited edition print of “The Skeleton Dance” from D23 a few years ago. A hand-made Day of the Dead garland from my great aunt hangs above it. There is a custom-decorated kitchen island (from IKEA) in the background. The nun skeleton came from HauntX in 2007 and has haunted my kitchens throughout college and beyond.

My plate set is 222 Fifth Wiccan Lace from Home Goods. I, unfortunately, was behind the eight ball on this one and had to scour eBay for my set. The pumpkins are drink-safe led light ice cubes.

Here is a close-up of the IKEA kitchen island. I used mod podge and Martha Stewart craft paper to give it the Halloween design. The yellows and oranges fit perfectly with the rest of my decor. I am quite happy with how easy it is to clean and how well it has held up over 5+ years of use.

Since I hate blank white walls, I love to add lots of wall art to spruce up my apartment. The spiderweb artwork is a real spiderweb that the artist found hiking in a wooded area in Western New York with real WNY preserved leaves. I do not have her name, but you can find her vending at Canal Fest of the Tonawandas every year.

Cooking & Prep Areas

My oven area. The picture and utensil holder are DIY projects I completed myself. The owl holders are from Masters3Sisters on Etsy. I spend a lot of cooking time in this area, and can’t help but smile every time I look up at the cute owls and my Haunted Mansion print oven mitts.

I used vintage Halloween stickers from Amazon.com and mod podge on a plain brown ceramic holder to make this beautiful custom utensil holder. It is little details like this that elevate the theming. When you want to make a room unique, look out for plain items that can be enhanced. It makes all the difference!

A framed vintage Halloween postcard print keeps my sink area on-theme. A cat candy dish makes the perfect sponge holder (just bleach it weekly to keep germs at bay). Of course, I have to have lots of Bath & Body Works soap on hand.

A Work in Progress

Now for my work in progress, my prep area and hydroponic garden. The gravestone print features one of my favorite morbid poems:

"Remember me as you pass by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, soon you will be. Prepare for death and follow me"

The skeleton picture is from Spirit Halloween. The skull picture was a thrift store find (it had an original price tag on it as $200, but I got it for $15). I love thrifting for decor pieces – it is a great way to find unique items. Additionally, when I thrift items, I feel less afraid to use them for DIY projects since I did not invest as much in them.

Yes, you can also see my 8-Foot ceiling spider peeking over from the horror-movie themed living room – but that is a whole other story!

Other little touches include skull glasses atop a Home Goods serving board, and a vintage Halloween trinket box.

Date Nights & Holiday Meals

As cool as my kitchen is (to me at least), things get even more spectacular for holidays and date nights. My ample supply of tablecloths, centerpieces, dinnerware, and LED lights allow me to set unique tablescapes. Here are just a few:

I hope you enjoyed a tour of my kitchen. It is ever-evolving, so I will post again after the next major round of changes.

Valentine’s Day 2021 Playlist

Valentine’s Day 2021 Playlist

While most people celebrate Valentine’s Day with rom-coms and pink hearts, those of us with an affinity for horror & Halloween do things a little different. Instead of Jack and Rose, we prefer Jack and Sally – and the power couple of Gomez & Morticia can’t be beat. Thus, I dedicate this “Love at First Bite” Valentine’s Day 2021 Playlist to all you horror & Halloween lovers out there.

The Song List

When my Honey-Bunny and I started dating, he was not into horror or Halloween. I made sure all that changed rather quickly! Now he has learned that the way to my heart is not with flowers or jewelry, but with pumpkin & skull-shaped baking supplies, horror DVDs, and jack-o-lanterns. He loves music, so I decided to put together this Valentine’s Day 2021 Playlist so we can have mood music while we eat our homemade Valentine’s Day dinner. I hope you all enjoy it as well!

Valentine's Day 2021 Playlist Song Explanations

“Just Like a Ghost, You’ve Been Haunting My Dreams”

Spooky is the classic Halloween/horror love song. I would be remiss if I left it off this Valentine’s Day playlist. The jazzy tone is a perfect way to start the evening – the cool of the evening, when everything is getting kind of groovy.

I first heard this song on a goth compilation cd from a record store when I was in Jr. High and fell in love with it immediately. From the opening piano to the stunning vocals, this song is amazing. The clever lyrics are a fun blend of macabre imagery and a love song.

There is no one I’d rather spend an evil night together with than my Honey-Bunny!

There are a plethora of versions of I Put a Spell on You. The most notable are the original version from Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Bette Midler’s Hocus Pocus rendition, but for those who want something just a little different, this version by Sylvia Black is a nice change of pace. Black has an alluring voice and the musical accompaniment is slow and jazzy.

Now that we’ve set the mood with three jazzy songs, it is time to pick up the pace. Ice Nine Kills takes inspiration from horror film classics for their songs. With Love Bites the inspiration was An American Werewolf in London. So howl at the moon with your lover while listening to this rocking duet.

Sometimes you just have to be silly. I can’t help but smile when I hear this song from the Disney Channel hit, Zombies. In a reimagining of the classic Romeo & Juliet story, Zombies chronicles the ill-fated love between a cheerleader and a zombie. Someday is the first love song duet and its horror icon imagery makes it a cute Valentine’s song for us horror lovers. What could go so wrong with a girl and a zombie?

“Frankenstein and Dracula have nothing on you. Jekyll and Hyde join the back of the queue”

Every once in a while, you need to remind your significant other who wears the pants in the relationship. Female of the Species is my subtle way of reminding my Honey-Bunny that I am the one running things around here!

As every relationship is a melding of two people, so is this list. My Honey-Bunny had a few recommendations for spooky-adjacent love songs he enjoys. This delightfully devilish song showcases Cake’s fun alt rock sound. He also appreciates the message that although all this lovey-dovey stuff is attractive to the fairer sex, there is an alternative motive as well.

This is my Honey-Bunny’s second suggestion. It is a little gruff for my tastes, but it does fit the horror/Halloween theme. Compromise is certainly important in a relationship! This is a fun, upbeat tune – so grab your partner and shake them bones!

Love can drive you crazy, especially when you are in a relationship with a monster – or someone who is obsessed with horror & Halloween. This is another high-energy tune to have fun with!

This is another cover song, with Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh’s recording the original version. I like the more modern twist. My Honey-Bunny and I first encountered this song from the film Cursed back when we were in high school (we had a date night at the movies). Therefore, this song as a personal connection to us as well as fitting with the Valentine’s horror theme.

I remember enjoying the rest of the soundtrack as well – I should check it out again soon.

I mentioned it at the start of this article, and I will reiterate it here: Gomez & Morticia Addams are the power couple of the horror & Halloween world. Haunted Heart was the featured song in the new animated Addams Family film, and the passionate, jazzy tune embodied their ghoulish romance.

“It takes the Batman, Wolfman, Frankenstein or Dracula to put her in the mood for love”

Although horror fanatics tend to be seen as more of a modern occurrence, the 1950’s had its share of b-horror movie fanatics. This cheesy song from The Diamonds chronicles one man’s attempts to woo his horror-loving girl. My Honey-Bunny can certainly relate to this poor man’s plight.

While this is more of a traditional love song, its focus on love enduring after death is sweet. The somber, heartfelt melody is a fitting way to end a romantic evening. It certainly makes me want to cuddle close with my Honey-Bunny!

And That’s the Valentine’s Day 2021 Playlist!

Anti-Valentine’s Day Playlist 2021

Anti-Valentine’s Day Playlist 2021

Does Valentine’s Day get you feeling down? Do you feel like February 14th is “Singles Awareness Day”? Are you pining over a long lost love in a cold, dark room while a raven mocks you? Let’s experience the heartache and pain together with this “A Stake Through the Heart” anti-valentine’s day 2021 playlist.

The Song List

Although – full disclosure – I currently have a wonderful Honey-Bunny to spend the 14th with, I have not forgotten what it felt like to not have that comfort at this time of year. Therefore, I have curated a playlist with thirteen spooky songs that embody the downs and – eventually – ups of being on your own.

Anti-Valentine's Day 2021 Song Explanations

I think it is impossible to be named Emily, love all things morbid and spooky, and not have a soft spot for this song by The Zombies. It is certainly one of my favorite songs of all time and a staple of any self-pity playlist I create for myself. So, let’s start our anti-valentine’s day 2021 playlist journey with this beautifully forlorn tune.

“The ceilings are white, but the shadows are black. The ghost in my heart say’s you’re never coming back. The house is haunted by the echo of your last goodbye”.

This is an old song that has been covered a number of times. In this version The Phantom Chords have done a wonderful job of creating a jazzy, more upbeat tune to feel downbeat to. Haunted houses, ghosts, and other spooky imagery work very well to symbolize loss and loneliness.

I’ve certainly been haunted by the ghosts of my past. Weezer’s Haunt You Every Day continues the previous song’s theme of losing yourself in the memories of faded love. Of course, we would all rather be the one doing the haunting instead of the one haunted.

When Karen Elson was married to The White Stripes’ Jack White, Third Man Records produced her first album, The Ghost Who Walks. The hauntingly beautiful titular song conveys the heartbreak and betrayal felt when a former love breaks up with you. As the lyrics state, it can cut like a knife.

One line from the song that resonates with me is “she’s crying to herself because his eyes never once looked cruel”. Sometimes love ends and a relationship is just not working. There is not always cruelty and malintent behind it.

An organ sound adds extra mystery and spookiness to the track. Also, that cover art is eerily beautiful!

No matter how bad you have it, there is always someone who has it worse. Remains of the day is the origin story for the Corpse Bride, Emily (no relation to yours truly). Unlike the previous song, here our protagonist literally had a knife plunged deep into her heart.

For those of you who aren’t aware of this amazing band, they take inspiration from horror films. The World in My Hands is based on Edward Scissorhands, but it still fits nicely in the spurned love theme of this list. We can all relate to the feeling of having a crush on someone above us in the social strata – and, of course, the knowledge that nice guys finish last.

This fun, rockin’ song concerns a breakup gone wrong. When the song’s protagonist broke it off with her beau, he put a voodoo curse on her. If she wouldn’t be with him, she wouldn’t be with anyone else either.

The first half of this list featured songs of sadness, pity, and loneliness. Now, it is time to move on to starting to feel a little more empowered. Tainted love is a classic 80’s anthem of those who realize they have gotten out of a toxic relationship. No one can make a song as creepy and dark as Marilyn Manson, so this cover is a must-have on a spooky anti-Valentine’s Day song list.

Next on our empowerment track here is Monster by Paramore. Being single is not always a bad thing. “Now that you’re gone, the world is ours”. We have a lot more strength than we realize!

This song combines spooky/horror and empowerment. Sabrina is a strong, independent woman. Even though I strongly disagree with her taste in men (I’m team Harvey 100%), I love how the character is headstrong and confident. When I am feeling down or insecure, this is my current go-to song. An upbeat and peppy melody will certainly brighten your day!

Lead female vocalists are not often altos, but Amanda Palmer is outstanding. Her deep voice is mesmerizing in this song about thriving on one’s own – and rubbing it in your ex’s face! That is certainly the best part about being single and empowered.

If A Rose for Emily has a special place in my heart, Bust Your Kneecaps also does for a similar reason. This song educates “Johnny” on exactly what he faces after he breaks up with the main character. As my Honey-Bunny is also a Johnny this song is a fun little tune I love to play for him as a cautionary tale.

The lyrics are not so much spooky as they are violent – or, rather, persuasive. They are certainly not threats, just promises.

Okay, I know that this one seems like the odd one out – what does a video game song from a passive-aggressive computer have to do with a break-up playlist? Let’s take a look at those lyrics:

“I used to want you dead, but now I only want you gone.”

“Go make some new disaster. That’s what I’m counting on. You’re someone else’s problem. Now I only want you gone.”

All that sounds pretty applicable to a bad relationship to me!

And That's the Anti-Valentine's Day 2021 Playlist!

Did you like it? What songs are on your breakup playlist? Let me know in the comments!

Sleeping with the Fishes Photo Shoot

Sleeping with the Fishes Photo Shoot

In this “Sleeping with the Fishes” photo shoot, photographer Moriah Burton captured some fantastically creepy images.

Using the “Sleeping with the Fishes” lighted tombstone from Target (2020 Halloween season) we transformed my living room into this underwater black void. I had fun finally getting to rest in peace in my silky green nightgown. My horror-themed plushies and ghost pillowcase also helped create a fun vibe for the photos. We used a Neewer LED light and a Canon camera for the images. All photos were edited with pixlr.com.

Sweet Dreams and Pleasant Nightmares
Listening for Things that Go Bump in the Night
Dream a Little Dream of Me

This was the first photo shoot we tried with my Canon camera and Neewer light. We were a little heavy-handed with the lighting and have since bought softer lighting to supplement the main LED floodlight. Even though much could be improved, I am proud of our first try for stylized photos.

10 Movies to Be Excited For in 2021

10 Movies to Be Excited For in 2021

2020 certainly threw a curveball in many studios’ movie release schedules. Many films only released digitally or had their release dates pushed to this year. Now that most studios have a pulse on the state of the industry, we can tell that 2021 will be a much better year for horror releases. From sequels to new indie horror titles, I foresee 2021 being a strong year for horror. Here are 10 movies to be excited for in 2021:

After unearthing a gem that controls an evil monster looking to destroy the Universe, a young girl and her brother use it to make him do their bidding. It isn’t long before PG’s reappearance draws the attention of intergalactic friends and foes from across the cosmos. Before long, a rogues’ gallery of alien combatants converges in small-town suburbia to battle for the fate of the galaxy.

A quiet drifter (Nicholas Cage) is tricked into a janitorial job at the now condemned Wally’s Wonderland. The mundane tasks suddenly become an all-out fight for survival against wave after wave of demonic animatronics. Fists fly, kicks land, titans clash — and only one side will make it out alive.

A young girl, passionate about fashion design, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s. There she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it seems, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences.

Following the events at home, the Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world. Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats lurking beyond the sand path.

This film is the epic next chapter in the cinematic Monsterverse. The fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong battle each other -with humanity caught in the balance.

Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

The Devil Made Me Do It reveals a chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). The film revolves around one of the most sensational cases from their files. It starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they’d ever seen before. The case marks the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense.

When a single mom and her kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

A “spiritual sequel” to the horror film Candyman (1992) that returns to the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began. A decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, Anthony and his partner move into a loft in the now gentrified Cabrini. A chance encounter with an old-timer exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to use these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, he unknowingly opens a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence.

The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series.

We Bleed Red & green By Jeff C. Carter

We Bleed Red & green By Jeff C. Carter

On the first day of Christmas my ghoul love gave to me… We Bleed Red & Green by Jeff C. Carter. We Bleed Red & Green is a Christmas anthology containing 12 macabre tales for the holiday season. Curl up near the fireplace with a hot cocoa and read these bite-sized horror tales as you wait for Santa (or Krampus).

Mr. Carter reached out and provided me with an advanced copy of this book. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon and releases on November 24th, 2020.

My Review

If you were a fan of Carter’s We Bleed Orange & Black, you will likely also enjoy this Christmas-themed micro-horror collection. Much like the other book, each of the selections contained in We Bleed Red & Green are between 1-7 pages. Once again the stories take a variety of forms – from traditional prose, to a cleverly written letter from an elf, and alternative lyrics for a traditional Christmas carol.

Each story has its own unique narrative and characters. Santa gets tough on the Naughty List, a shut-in becomes addicted to a mysterious snow globe, and a Christmas tree brings more than just Christmas spirit into a household (certainly a personal fear of mine).

My Favrorites

Two stories truly stood out in this collection. In “Turnspit Thomas”, a young inventor uses his creations to foil a land baron who set a hell hound upon him. At seven pages, this is the longest story in the collection and the extra pages allow it to have the depth and detail some of the shorter pieces lack. It has a timeless quality, reading like traditional folklore – with a young man on a journey, quick-thinking to vanquish a foe, and the customary neat and tidy ending. Although this piece was my favorite in the collection (and probably my favorite short story by Carter in both anthologies), it did lack a close connection to the Christmas theme of the other tales.

“He Spoke Not a Word” was the other story that stayed with me long after I read it. In it, Santa visits the house of a recently deceased woman and honors her memory. It is touching rather than scary, but masterfully blends the macabre with the sentimental. At only a page long, it introduces a heartfelt concept of how this magical being can remember us, even when the rest of the world may forget. I had not expected to cry from this anthology, but the story hit a nerve and served as a powerful ending to the book.

Overall, the book is a fun read and full of interesting premises. I would, however, have liked more depth and detail in the stories. They are all just a little too short to fully immerse yourself in them, but they certainly spark the imagination and are worth reading. This book will be one I pull out to get me into the Christmas spirit in future years.

About the Author - Jeff C. Carter

Jeff C. Carter’s stories have been featured in dozens of anthologies, translated for international markets, and adapted for podcasts. His love of Halloween (and Christmas!), adventure and science continue to inspire his horror, action and science fiction writing. He lives in Los Angeles with a cat, a dog, and a human.

Haunter’s Tale: Volume II

Haunter’s Tale: Volume II

J. Michael Roddy’s Haunter’s Tale: Volume II is an anthology featuring original content and interviews with over 50 of the Halloween industry’s top Haunters. Like the previous volume, this book contains short stories, scripts, photographs, interviews, and more that represent various facets of the horror and Halloween industry. Roddy does a wonderful job of collecting diverse content and curating insightful interviews.

This book is a must-own for members of the haunt industry as it features so many of their colleagues.

Emily's Insidious Inclusions

The best part of this book? Yours truly – Emily Louise Rua – has contributed two new short stories! Writing has always been a pastime of mine and scary stories are my favorite. After weeks of hard work, I polished two of my favorite sinister stories to share with readers:

In the Hallways Below tells the tale of a group of children whose game of hide and seek turns sinister when they unleash an evil entity who wants to be “it”. Told in the first-person present tense, this was a fun exercise in writing and bring the reader right into the horrific action.

Fear of the Dark concerns a father struggling to help his son overcome his fear of the basement. The little boy’s fear, however, might not be so unfounded.

We Bleed Orange & Black By Jeff C. Carter

We Bleed Orange & Black By Jeff C. Carter

We Bleed Orange & Black by Jeff C. Carter is an anthology novel containing 31 tales embodying the spirit of the Halloween season. Mr. Carter reached out and provided me with an advanced copy of this book, which is currently available for pre-order on Amazon. It releases on October 6th, 2020.

Synopsis

A twisted faerie finds a lost child, a teenage werewolf sneaks out during a full moon, and a legion of monsters begins the downfall of man. Explore Halloween from Appalachia to the Arctic Circle and journey from the Old West to Mars.

This spooktacular goody bag harvests all the joys and terrors of the best night of the year. If you love air crisp as cider and scented with burning leaves, if you greet the darkness with a jack o’lantern grin, and if you yearn for the veil between worlds to grow thin, then you bleed orange & black.

About the Author

In addition to being a lifelong Halloween fanatic, Jeff C. Carter’s stories are featured in dozens of anthologies, translated for international markets, and adapted for podcasts. Podcasts include the Reedsy story prompt contest (winner), Transmissions from Punktown, Delta Green: Extraordinary Renditions, A Mythos Grimmly, ‘eFiction’ and ‘Nightland’ magazine, and the ‘Tales to Terrify’ podcast, among others.

His previous collection, Between the Teeth, hit #4 in sci-fi and #11 in horror short stories on the Kindle lists.

Review

Anthology books can be hit or miss – sometimes they contain a strong body of short fiction and sometimes they are hastily cobbled together. We Bleed Orange & Black falls mostly into the first category. Each story in this anthology is only a few pages long at most, but they all create unique worlds that can fuel the imagination for far longer than their read time.

Carter’s variety of topics and narrators is impressive. Each story has a distinct voice – from a little girl who fears the monster in her closet, to a weary tomb-robber, to even an octopus! Unlike some authors, who have a clear formula for their main characters, Carter showcases characters from many different ages, genders, and backgrounds . In doing so he creates a book with something for everyone to enjoy. In that vein, although the book is mostly targeted at adults, it does contain a special index highlighting the more family-friendly stories to share with older children. From tamer PG stories to a particularly gory detective story, odds are you will find something to appeal to your tastes.

The book not only plays with a variety of characters and themes, but also a variety of formats. In addition to traditional short stories, Carter also includes poems, a “historical” piece on Mars colony Halloween celebrations, a spooky how-to article, and a haunted house “review”. Changing up the format keeps the reader engaged and helps to make each piece memorable. Each entry offered something new, never feeling repetitious.

Another aspect of the book deserving praise is the amount of detail put into the stories. Carter appears to have researched folklore from around the world for the various entries. He includes historical facts like how people used to believe that hanged men could provide cures for certain ailments. His Mars trivia will invoke memories of elementary school science classes. Fans of cryptozoology will love the cameos in “The Great American Scare-Off”. Carter assembled quite the motley crew from mythologies all around the globe!

The biggest criticism that can be made of this anthology is that the stories can be too short at times. Carter creates colorful settings and rich premises, but allows little time for us to explore them. One such entry is “Trunk or Treat”, which ends as soon as the mysterious twist is revealed. Even Carter seems to want to expand some of his worlds further – including two connecting stories. It would have been enjoyable to see more overlapping narratives. Having only two connecting stories felt a little out of place.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, We Bleed Orange & Black is a perfect addition to any Halloween book collector’s shelves. One can tell that Carter truly loves the holiday from his many nods to Halloween nights of yore. His epilogue, “How to Preserve Your Pumpkin”, resonates with anyone who wants the magic of Halloween to last all year.

I found this anthology to be inspiring and a pleasure to read all the way through. I recommend it to all fans of short horror fiction.

After reading We Bleed Orange & Black, I am looking forward to his next novella, The Year Without a Halloween. It revolves around a Halloween “cancelled” due to snow. Having grown up on the East Coast myself, (in the epicenter of blizzards, Buffalo, New York) the subject matter hits close to home, and I know that Carter can craft a nostalgic tale that will hearken to those childhood memories with some scary twists. An excerpt can be found in We Bleed Orange & Black.
